On Friday evening, June 1, the historical pine tree lane at Merensky High School was the guest of honour at the last memory lane dinner.
This initiative by the governing body had a double purpose: to raise funds for the new gymnasium as well as providing a fitting farewell salute to these giants, who for many years have provided shelter and shade for generations of Plasies and visitors.
Guests celebrated life and friendship with fine dining, while bonfires and mood music created a special ambiance.
The final decision to take down the trees did not come easily. This inevitable decision was preceded by three years of negotiations between the school and their insurance company. Gratifying news, though, is that new indigenous trees will be planted to form a brand new lane where memories, moments and magic will once again await future Plasies.
