Nine orator teams from Merensky High School participated in the Veritas Team Orators Competition at Pietersburg Hoërskool on 5 and 6 March 2018. It was the second time that the Plasies entered this exciting competition, giving it their all against teams from PHS and Hans Strijdom.

In the Afrikaans section the Plasie teams ruled the roost. The grade 12’s (84%) ended in first place overall with a witty argument about teenagers and their quest for perfect bodies. Unfortunately there was no grade 11 team, but the grade 10’s also came out tops with their topic: Write your own speeches, and scored 79%. The juniors entered two teams each, and successfully followed in the footsteps of the seniors.

With their topic: We are under pressure, the grade 9.2 (91%) were awarded first place. The all boys’ team grade 9.1 (80%) obtained a 4th position with their plea to cancel Valentines day. Plasieland is exceptionally proud of the two grade 8 teams. Grade 8.1 (86%) impressed with a first place arguing against spoonfuls leading to obesity. The grade 8.2 group scored (80%) with their plea: Just be yourself, ending in third position overall.

Three English teams proudly took to the stand this year, the first time that English learners joined in the fun. And fun it was! The grade 10 team had the adjudicators in stitches with their speech: Selfies self-destruction, while the grade 9s struck a chord with their girl-power topic Women are better qualified to lead than men. The grade 12s ventured into more serious territory with their discussion of mental health.

It was a valuable learning opportunity for all the teams, and they will surely be back next year.
