On 5 September a jam-packed school hall, décor that reminded of an enchanted forest, esteemed judges and 22 popular grade 11 contestants resulted in all systems go for this years’ Mr and Miss Merensky pageant. In the run up to the final competition the contestants had to contribute to various worthy causes in the Tzaneen area. This year the ‘top debutant’ title was also up for grabs, awarded to the best fundraiser.

Bouwer Bosch, well known singer songwriter from the band, Straatligkinders, was a super Master of Ceremonies. His witticisms and relaxed vibe contributed to a most enjoyable evening.

The group introduced themselves with a modern dance item, whereafter every couple took to the catwalk in casual wear, followed by formal evening attire. One of the highlights of the evening was when the 2017 sêr group joined Bouwer on stage to perform his hit-song, Sy klink soos lente.

The atmosphere was tangible when the winners were announced. The new Mr Merensky for 2017 is Delux Jooste and by his side, Miss Merensky, Ciné Venter (also Miss Personality). The title of 1st Princess goes to Bernalee Benade, who is also Miss Photogenic. Francois Smit is the 1st Prince.

Title carriers of 2nd Prince and Princess are Jéhan Goosen and Donné Oosthuizen (also bearing the new title of top debutant). Mr Photogenic is no one else than tall, dark and handsome, Heine Booysen.
