It was game on from the word go when the u.14 rugby team of Merensky High School played in the Virsekerbeker quarter final game against the team of Hoërskool Piet Retief.
Plasiepark came alive when the promising youngsters ran onto the field, well prepared to give their best.
Piet Retief dominated the first half of the game, leading 17-5 at half time. After coaches Mark Louwies and Willem Hermann inspired them to regain their focus, the boys eagerly regrouped and played an amazing second half. In the blink of an eye the scoreboard reflected a 24-17 Plasie lead. Piet Retief survived this knock on the chin and answered with a converted try, levelling the playing field with a 24-24 draw.
The Merensky boys could almost taste victory, but it was not to be. In the final minutes the determined visitors managed to score the winning try. Final score: 24-29, bringing the Plasies’ Virsekerbeker dreams to an end.
Plasie tries were scored by Phillip Ludick, Janco Grobler, Henro Delport and Heinrich Coetzee. Neil van Vuuren successfully managed two conversions.
