Long before sunrise on Saturday, 29 October, athletes of Merensky High School took to the road to compete in the 2016 JJJ Prestige Athletics Meet at Rob Ferreira High School in White River.
This was a gigantic occasion with no less than 21 participating schools with Merensky, Rob Ferreira and Hoërskool Nelspruit ranking amongst the favourites.
In spite of the heat wave the Plasie athletes burned both track and field. Three records are now owned by Thato Shokane (boys, u.15, triple jump), Anri McLean (girls, u.19, 1500m) and the girls u.16 2x200m relay (run by Sancha van Niekerk and Simoné van den Bergh).
Sancha van Niekerk (u.16) won the trophy for the best senior girls short distance athlete of the day.
The following athletes are proud of their ABSA table rating of more than 800, this early in the season: Xihlovo Shibamba (boys, u.14, long jump, 965 points and 200m, 830 points), Thato Shokane (boys, u.15, triple jump, 902 points), Vutomi Mkhabele (boys, u.15, 100m, 902 points and 200m, 864 points), Ignatius Stucki (boys, u.14, 100m, 875 points), Noko Malatji (boys, u.19, 100m, 841 points), Dillon de Lange (boys, u.15, javelin, 838 points), Revan Beukes (boys, u.15, high jump, 823 points), Reuben Corono (boys, u.16, 200m, 804 points) and Lourentia van Dyk (girls, u.15, high jump, 812 points).
Although Merensky was only allowed one athlete per item, the team reaped a total of 39 medals and came in third.
