On 25 and 26 February Merensky’s archery club hosted the Limpopo 3D championships at Plasieland.
After registration at “The Voerkraal”, 60 competitors braved the wet weather. An adventurous range of 22 butts were set in a natural hunting environment over a distance of 1-4km.
During this event archers aim at mock-animal targets as they would appear in their natural surroundings. Two arrows were shot per target and the participants were scored based on their groupings. This type of competition is challenging in the respect that it forces the archers to navigate rocky and often uneven terrain loaded with shrubbery, trees and outcrops which obscure the view.
The maximum distance for adults (over 17) and veterans (over 55) is 60 yards, juniors (13 to 17) is 50 yards and cubs (up to 12 years) is 30 yards. The archers sloshed their way through the course in 6 hours.
During the competitions Benno Kotzé, Armand Wiers and Martin Mostert achieved a provincial qualifying score, whilst Lin-Mari Theron attained a sought after national qualifier.
Merensky’s medal winners collected a host of accolades in their various categories. Coach Ockert le Roux, Canell Jackson and Izelri Theron obtained 2 gold medals each. Armand Wiers and Martin Mostert received a gold medal each and one gold and one silver was awarded to team members Lin-Mari Theron, Ryan Jackson, Sean Hunt and Benno Kotzé.
Ashley Hunt, Heinrich Pieterse, De Marco Meyer and Janco Theron took home silver medals. SP du Preez and Dewald Haagner received bronze medals.
Merensky Archery salutes Mr Ockert le Roux, founder of the club, for his 10 years of dedicated service and bid him an enjoyable retirement.
