Merensky High School athletes competed in the Lowveld Prestige Athletics meet held at Barberton High School on Saturday, 11 February. The bus left shortly after midnight on Saturday morning and arrived at Barberton with spirited athletes ready to seize the day.
Seven schools were ready to give their all in typical lowveld conditions, humid and hot. Rob Ferreira High School won the day, with Merensky in a close second with 597 points.
Records were shattered by Kesia Pohl (girls u.16 shot put, 11.14m), Dillion de Lange (boys u.16 javelin, 53.16m) and Sancha van Niekerk (girls u.17 400m, 60 seconds).
Top honours were awarded to Van Niekerk as Senior Victrix Ludorum. De Lange also received a trophy for best javelin athlete of the day. Noko Malatji was honoured as best hurdles athlete.
The top 5 Plasie girls were in first place Emma Delrymple-Hay (high jump, 806 ABSA points), Kesia Pohl (shot put, 773 points), Lourentia van Dyk (high jump, 767 points), Sancha van Niekerk (400m, 747 points) and Kgabo Mamorobela (long jump, 735 points).
The first five Plasie boys according to the ABSA table were Dillion de Lange (javelin, 808 points), Thato Shokane (100m, 807 points), Vutomi Mkhabela (200m, 806 points), Juandré Slippers (high jump, 780 points) and Ruan van Rooyen (200m, 775 points).
